Who is Hannah Gross? aka Debbie on ‘Mindhunter’ – Biography

As a child of parents in the acting and production industry, it would seem inevitable that she would end up on the screen. However, if it were not for her perseverance and practice, she would not have earned the fame she has today. Hannah Gross is a Canadian actress, who has appeared in both supporting, minor parts as well as leading roles in various films, and has even done a short stint on the stage. Despite her relatively prolific work in the industry, Gross earned her reputation and broke into the main-stream for her portrayal of Debbie Mitford, crime-stopping sidekick, in the hit Netflix crime series “Mindhunter”.

Early life and Family

Hannah Gross was born on 25 September 1990, in Ontario, Canada; she is the daughter of Paul Gross and Martha Burns, and the younger sister of Jack Gross. Already, looking at her parents, it seems that some of her future can be divined – Paul Gross is an actor, producer, and writer with extensive credits to his name, most recently featuring in “Tales of the City” (2019). Her mother is equally entrenched in the industry, and appeared in “Moon Dog” (2018) and even has a set of producing and directing credits to her names, such as “Robin and Mark and Richard III” (2016). However, it was not always clear that Gross would follow in her parents’ footsteps; she was an unusually shy child, who avoided the limelight.

Gross had a youth steeped in adventure. She would often visit her grandmother, who grew up in Alberta, Canada. The two would go for long walks and go bone hunting, which developed and nurtured a deep interest in archaeology for Gross. Hannah also developed a love for theatre and film when she received a VHS copy of “The Matrix” when she was nine. She watched the movie over and over, and it has a special place in her heart to this day. She and a friend even worked at Hooters after getting their bartending licenses – needless to say, Gross hated the job, and was relieved when she was finally able to break into the entertainment industry.

Education

Hannah Gross attended the Trisch School of the Arts, which exists under the auspices of New York University. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre and, as an indication of her eccentricity, minored in religious studies. Gross’s degree in theatre stood her in good stead, as she would later go on to perform on stage, and even directed a play of her own.

Career

Stage and Film

Hannah landed her first film role in 2002, playing an uncredited role in “Men with Brooms”. She played several other minor roles in the following years, but finally landed a slightly more significant role in “Drei Madchen” in 2005.

With her acting career taking so long to get off the ground, she took a temporary break from the screen, and pursued other avenues of acting.

Following the path she had laid by studying theatre, Gross set her sights on the stage. Almost immediately her efforts were rewarded with prominent roles and recognition. She played Katie in the Young Center for the Performing Arts’ “Doc” in 2010, and followed this by playing coveted roles in both “Talk to me Like the Rain” and “A Streetcar Named Desire” in 2012, which she also directed, giving her a rounded perspective on the acting industry.

After her brief stage tenure, Hannah Gross returned to the screen in 2013, landing her first significant screen roles. She played Abby, a co-lead in the film “I Used to be Darker”, and her first lead in the titular role in “Lydia Hoffman, Lydia Hoffman”. Now established in the industry and gaining recognition, Gross was contracted to appear in ever-increasing roles in the following years.

In 2017 Hannah Gross landed the role that would skyrocket her quest for fame, when she was cast as Debbie Mitford in “Mindhunter”, the Netflix TV series. This was a role that required gravitas and excellent skills, both of which Gross delivered with professionalism and aplomb.

She received various accolades for the role, and it turned out to be a pivotal moment in her career. Gross went on to play recognized roles in the popular series “The Sinner” and “Deadwax” both in 2018, and then played the young Penny Fleck in “The Joker”.

Personal Life

If Hannah Gross is involved in a romantic relationship, she has done an excellent job of keeping the public in the dark. Gross leads a life that is as private as is possible for a celebrity life to be, and avoids talking about her personal life to the media.

As far as can be determined, Gross is not romantically involved with anyone, even telling Interview magazine in 2007 that ‘Women should never be seriously involved in dating in their mid-twenties’. As Gross reaches the latter part of her twenties, we may now see her begin to engage in the dating life.

Appearance

Hannah Gross is 5ft 7ins (1.7m) tall and weighs 120lbs (55kgs). While the length of her hair varies from a bob to longer than shoulder length, it can be described as a medium shade of brown, although at times it can appear redder.

She has blue eyes and a slender figure. Hannah loves to outfit herself in stylish clothes, a by-product of her love of shopping, and has used her appearance to dabble in the modeling industry – although she merely views this as a hobby.

Net Worth and Salary

At this stage, Gross has appeared in over 25 feature films, multiple plays, and more recently, TV series. While her salary for these jobs has not been disclosed, Gross certainly has made enough money to live a comfortable and luxurious life. Hannah Gross has an estimated net worth of over $1 million as of 2020.
